Heisel Residence: January 2017

January 2 - The Great Room of the Guest House has the interior trim just about completed. These beams are on the vaulted ceiling over the living room area.

January 2 - Looking back towards the kitchen, the air return plenum is visible on the left. It will obviously have a grill over it. The top trim of the kitchen cabinets has not been installed yet.

January 2 - From the Guest House Kitchen, the ceiling beams and window trim of the living room area is visible.

January 2 - Brick work on the Brays Room fireplace in the Main House is complete. The blue wire is an A/V source. There will be a flat screen television mounted on the fireplace.

January 2 - The raised hearth is brick as is the (nearly) flush hearth in the Guest House. The fresh air supply pipe is visible on the right side of the firebox near the back wall.

January 2 - The Kitchen beams were completed a few days ago. The large pipe in the background is for the range hood.

January 2 - The interior doors are being hung. This is the hall towards the Owner's Entry and the Master Suite.

January 2 - The trim carpenters have drawn a 'cheat sheet' on the wall of the Library to make sure they construct the beams as they are designed. The blue chalk lines mark where the beams will be built.

January 2 - The Living room beams were finished a few days ago. Now the ceiling is also complete in the Great Room of the Main House.

January 3 - This was taken standing in the doorway to the Kitchen from the Hallway. The cabinet soffit is visible on the left. From this vantage point, all four ceiling beams are visible. The kitchen sink will go in front of the triple window on the far wall. The door beside the triple window allows access to the screened porch.

January 3 - The Master Bedroom ceiling beams are completed. There will be a power shade over the triple window.

January 3 - The Master Shower tile is complete and grouted. Glass will enclose the shower on the open sides.

January 4 - The window and door in Julie's Office have been trimmed. The walls are now being trimed.

January 4 - The foyer beams are installed. Trim will go between the bottom of the beams and the tops of the transoms.

January 4 - The Jr. Master Bedroom has ceiling beams installed. The doors and windows are also trimmed. The two outside doors are stationary.

January 4 - Beamwork is being installed on the ceiling of the Library. The beams in the foreground are finished. In the background, you can see the underlying structure for the finish poplar trim. The small dark circles are can lights. The rectangular opening over the window is an HVAC outlet.

January 4 - This is another view of the ceiling beam work in the Library. The square opening on the far wall is an HVAC air return. Notice the unfinished beams on the left side.

January 4 - This is a view down half of the 70 foot hallway. It is taken from the Master Suite hallway. The stairway is to the right. The open to the kitchen (on the left) has the jamb installed. The double doors on the right allow access to a Pantry and under stair storage. The ladder in the distance is in the Foyer.

January 4 - The Master Bedroom casing and baseboard has been installed. Once the interior trim is done and the cabinet installation is complete, the house will be ready for the painters.

January 4 - The Laundry Room doorway (on the right) has the jamb installed. The wood wainscot continues into the stair well.

January 6 - Here are the foyer beams as seen from the Master Suite side of the hallway. The trim has not been installed in the Foyer yet.

January 6 - The Master Bath Toilet Room has baseboard installed. The purple wall board is water resistant board.

January 6 - The Jr. Master Bedroom beam work and trim is finished. Nail holes are being filled and sanded today.

January 6 - Even though the wood will be painted, the boards are cut accurately and the joints are tight as they should be. Some trim carpenters get sloppy with paint grade trim because cracks and gaps can be filled. That does not happen on our jobs.

January 6 - This is the Main House Chimney and beams in the Great Room (with the working lights off).

January 6 - In the Guest House, the joints are accurate and very tight. This is the mark of a good carpenter.

January 9 - This is the entry door of Julie's Office. There is a closet behind the double doors. The bath is across from the double doors.

January 9 - The Jr. Master Bedroom door wall is trimmed. The beams are also ready for paint prep and paint. The two center doors are active; the two outer ones, fixed.

January 9 - This is also the Jr. Master Bedroom. The entry door is on the right and the wall of doors is on the left.

January 9 - The windows in the Jr. Master Bath have been trimmed. The exterior shutters are closed on the right window.

January 9 - Trim has been installed over the transoms in the Brays Room and between the transoms and doors.

January 9 - The Master Bath windows are now trimmed. The corner knee space in the cabinets will have three posts for support and an apron just as the Jr. Master Bath does.

January 10 - The Master Suite Hallway has trim. The double doors are to a linen closet. The lower left opening is the doorway to the Master Bedroom.

January 10 - The Jr. Master Suite Hallway has crown molding. The black rectangle is an air intake for the HVAC unit. The door on the right goes to Julie's Office.

January 10 - The Kitchen triple windows (but not the door) have casing installed. The Kitchen sink will go in front of the triple windows.

January 10 - The Master end of the Hallway also has crown. The Kitchen door is on the left of the photo. A Pantry is on the right.

January 10 - This is the Garage as seen from the road. This access drive will be closed with landscaping soon.

January 11 - More trim has been installed on the Front door wall. Another piece of trim will go above the existing trim and below the beams.

January 12 - Door casing and crown are installed in the Jr. Master Bath. The door in the distance is in the Jr. Master Bedroom and looks out onto a screened porch.

January 12 - The front doors have casing around the doors. A piece of trim below the beams has not been installed yet.

January 12 - The Owner's Entry doors are being trimmed. The door on the right is to the powder room. The passage through the door on the left is the stairway.

January 12 - The Master Suite end of the Hallway has crown molding. The cased opening (on the left) has not been finished yet.

January 12 - This is looking into the Master bedroom. The Master Bath is on the left; a Linen Closet, the right and Master Bedroom, straight ahead.

January 16 - Trim over the transoms in the Brays Room is more visible with this color enhanced photo. The trim and wall will be painted.

January 16 - More trim is going up in the Foyer. Notice the opening to the Great Room (on the left) is jambed and cased.

January 16 - From the landing, the stair treads are visible. They will be sanded and finished when the floors are finished.

January 16 - The marsh is looking nice on this beautiful 75 degree January 16 day. We had a few sprinkles earlier, but now the sky is blue and the weather perfect.

January 17 - The opening between the Kitchen and Dining area of the Great Room has been jambed. Casing is started on it.

January 17 - The soil around the Breezeway has been leveled in preparation for the step foundations.

January 17 - The soil around the front of the Main House (and the guest House) has been leveled in preparation for the stair foundations.

January 18 - This is a post for the snack bar part of the kitchen cabinets. We moved the apron boards out on the posts to make room to clear the panels behind the cabinets.

January 18 - It turned out the posts were slightly too short, so we will attach (and stain) shims on the top of the posts. The Apron boards are installed level with the cabinets on the left.

January 18 - The Island is assembled and in the proper location. There is knee space on the left for chairs. The shims on the floor will be trimmed before the baseboard is installed.

January 18 - This is a mock up of the faux beam in the Brays Room of the Main House. The dark block near the bottom to the right of the tape simulates the roll up shade. The capital for the pilaster is also shown.

January 18 - The hallway chair rail has been installed. The carpenters are continuing to work on the trim.

January 18 - Here is a view of the chair rail that shows the projection from the wall. This cased opening goes to Julia's Office.

January 19 - We have trimmed around the island post to compensate for its length. We will also place a shim on the post to support the granite.

January 19 - Trim work is finished on the Guest House cabinets except for a few pieces of baseboard we are short. Templating for counter tops is scheduled.

January 19 - The bottom of the cabinets has a base and shoe mold. It is some base material that we are short.

January 19 - The location of the exterior steps have been marked. A mason is digging the footers in preparation for pouring foundations for building the brick steps. There are steps on either side of the Breezeway, the front of the Main House and Guest House and off each Screened Porch of the Main House.

January 19 - The front steps of the Main House will have an apron at the foot of the steps. It is marked here on the ground.

January 19 - One of three posts is in place. There will be a post midway on each wall. There will be an apron board just above the knee space.

January 19 - The casing on the side of the large openings has been widened as directed by the architect. The walls are pine and the casing is poplar (hence the different appearance of the wood).

January 20 - The Master Bedroom windows have panels beneath them. They also have their trim finished.

January 20 - The Master Bath cabinets are installed. We will lower the dressing area, so we will have to cut the posts shorter, lower the apron and cut the decorative panels (not visible). The finished height of the dressing area will be about 30 inches above the finished floor. We will also lower the dressing area in the Jr. Master Bath. Templating for the counter tops has been requested for the guest house.

January 20 - Julie's Office has wood trim to simulate panels. The black rectangles are an electrical outlet and signal line for a television.

January 23 - We had a good bit of rain over the weekend. The fill washed a bit. It will be restored in a day or two.

January 23 - There is a lot of trim in the house. This short hallway near the Jr. Master Bedroom shows a lot of trim work.

January 23 - The wainscot in the hallway turns the corner of the stairway and dies into the stair skirt.

January 24 - The faux beam that doubles as a shade pocket is being fabricated in the Brays Room. The black line over the frame is temporary lighting.

January 24 - The cabinet soffit has been boxed with pine. The vent for the grill hood is in the middle of the soffit.

January 25 - The dressing area of the Jr. Master Bath cabinet has been lowered 4 inches to make it a more convenient height.

January 25 - The faux beam passes over the transits around the corner and terminates at the Brays Room fireplace.

January 25 - The front of the house will have brick steps and an apron. The foundation for it has been poured.

January 25 - There will be steps up to the Breezeway from both sides. This is the side towards the driveway.

January 25 - This is the foundation for the Breezeway steps that head to the service yard. The steps are straight across the Breezeway.

January 25 - The service yard slab has been poured. This will hold the Generator and other mechanical devices.

January 25 - There are steps from each Screened Porch of the Main House to the ground. This is the porch off the Kitchen and Master Bedroom.
